June 2nd 2010:
A beautiful, sunny day in June became the last day in Lauvstuas Bluestar Shantys life.
He got a kind of stroke and
after some hours we choosed to put him to sleep. There was no doubt about the dicicion, but it was just awful to do it. He became 8 years in May and managed during these years to get a lot of friends, both dogs and people. He did a lot of different things and I know we will be laughing of it later on. Be sure we will remember him, there are wholes in most of the pockets....
We have these dogs for a short time and all of us who loves dogs, will also get the sorrow when they go.
The poem written by Mary Frye
gives us the thought that they don't die, they live forever in our memories. That's why we also will smile and laugh thinking about our dogs and all the fun we did together.
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush.
On quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave an weep
I am not there, I do not sleep
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I'm not there, I did not die!
Rest in peace, dear Shanty!.
The years who passed
Shanty is from our litter nr. 8 - Kazita's last litter. We ended up keeping both a bitch and a male, and so far we haven't regretted that! Shanty is a real charmer with lots of personality. As a puppy he was somewhat cautious to certain things, but those days are gone.
As a one-year-old he's become a true charmer, and he's always looking for something good to eat, whether he's offered something from the hand or he finds something interesting in a pocket.
He attended a few puppy shows as a youngster, starting with winning BIS. The judge called him a little caramel, and we can agree with that. He's just too sweet! On his next show he won BOB and a Group 3rd. He's also been shown in junior class with 1. prizes, and he is very promising. Shanty has very nice proportions, a beautiful head and an extraordinary thick coat.
Shanty loves to swim, and getting him out of the water is a true challenge some times. He's a very spontaneous retriever, whether it's rabbits, crows or ducks that are thrown. We're very excited to see what becomes of him as he matures; he shows a lot of promise in the field, too.
We've also tried tracking with him. Our first try wasn't exactly a success; Shanty didn't exactly go bananas over the bloodstains on the ground. But it didn't take long before he figured out what to do, and now he's almost too eager (you know, there's that story about an apple and the tree…). But that's not the biggest problem, so we'll work it out. More things have happened. Springtime 2003, we started training with Shanty again.
He got the hang of tracking, decreasing the speed and becoming more accurate, but he still tends to be very speedy with little concentration.
Shanty also attended an activity course during the spring where we trained obedience, retrieving and searching. We also continued the hunting training, which turned out to be one of his favourites.
We had to wait for the retrieving on water. When the ice melted, he'd run down to the lake as soon as he could, where he bathed and had great fun picking water lilies (exterminating them is a more accurate phrase).
In July we entered Shanty to shows again, with the Toller Speciality in Sweden. He was shown in junior class and was 3rd in his class without HP. Last weekend in August we went to Skarnes where he was 1. JK with HP, thereafter 2. VK m/CK and ended 4th best dog. He was also shown in Motala with a 1st price in young dog class. He's not always enjoying showing, looking miserable, so we have toned down the shows.
Shanty a very gentle, kind dog who looks very promising, needing more time to mature mentally.
Autumn 2003 we started a hunting course with Shanty and Shakira. The first session, he was retrieving anything possible and was very eager. The fieldwork was a bigger obstacle. He was convinced it was only one retrieve, however many he saw falling. And he was very surprised when he found several retrieves. But Shanty learned to count to two and more, but then he thought the dummies landed in a stupid fashion, so he had to rearrange them before he could retrieve them, preferably to the person standing closest to him. He's given us many good laughs, but we'll take one step at a time. It's good to know there are optimists on his behalf.
We were in Denmark in October, where he was entered to both on dummy tests and utility test. He failed at one of the moments as he didn't remained sitting on the call, but all other tests went well.
The dummy test didn't go very well, as he wasn't used to dummies made of leather. He was used to canvas. We had tried them earlier on, everything working well, but he was not used to the situation they were to be retrieved on, so we brought some home to do more training.
In March 2004 the snow finally vanished and we could start training again. The first retrieves went very well, also the leather dummies, who turned out to be more fun than the canvas dummies...
Now we're going to Denmark in the middle of May, where we'll attend new tests.
Now we've started the retrieve on water with a loooong leash!!! Everything working very well, after he tried to swim to sea, he realized he couldn't go on for ever, and retrieved without any problems. Time will show what happens when we take the leash off!!!
Shanty has also met his first girlfriend, and we are excited about the results.
To be continued…
